Guest Blogger - Martin Robinson writes about the RHS

Earlier this week, we received an email from Martin Robinson, a new customer to the RHS. Martin is the author of the website The Book of Man and has released a blog on How to Make a Rocking Horse for your Kid. Over recent months Martin has become increasingly more interested in the making of rocking horses, we see in the latest feature on his website, his own personal ideas on an easy to follow, step-by-step guide to making a rocking horse. We love being able to keep up to date and hear all about your rocking horse success stories.
Welcome to this new series of Blogs, which we will be posting every fortnight. We hope to cover a range of topics including information on processes of horse making, some behind-the- scenes looks at the shop and what goes on, alongside the opportunity to meet some of the team and learn more about what they do here at The Rocking Horse Shop.

Last month, after 18 years working with us, Julie left The Rocking Horse Shop. Julie has been an absolute asset to the company and she will be greatly missed. We are going to start this series of blogs by meeting her replacement, Rowena.

 • Name: Rowena
• Date Joined RHS: March 2018
• Job Description: Leatherworker
• Skills: Saddle Making

What was your background before starting at the RHS?

Before I started at The Rocking Horse Shop I spent 13 years making saddles for real horses, I worked towards my “City and Guilds award in Advanced Saddlery and Leatherwork”. I have also ran my own business making saddles for real horses, it’s not that much different to wooden ones really!

How have you found your first 4 weeks at RHS?

The first 4 weeks have certainly been a challenge! It has been lovely to get to know all the team and meet lots of new customers.

I was able to spend the first two weeks working alongside Julie before she left, not a long time considering there are 5 different saddles styles, in 6 different colours, along with 10 different horses and sizes! That’s without considering the different restorations we have as well. So I have been very busy, reading and learning about some of the history of rocking horses.

What has been the biggest challenge in your first 4 weeks?

The biggest challenge so far, has certainly been resorting an original Collinson’s horse manufactured around 1960. Learning that each manufacturer had/has their own style and method for tacking up a horse, and learning how each company finished their designs has certainly been tricky! It is essential that each horse we restore is completed correctly and restored as close as possible to its original design.

Are there any ideas you have that you would like to work on here at RHS?

I am really looking forward to working on some new projects and ideas I have got. I have already been talking to Michael, in particular a racehorse design we are working on. Watch out, more coming soon!
