Fangfest Festival of Practical Arts 2012

Fangfest Festival of Practical Arts 2012

We had an absolutely fantastic Fangfest this year, with numbers of visitors higher than ever.  Everyone was delighted to see Bigger Bertie standing proud in The Rocking Horse Shop yard.

We had chain saw carvers demonstrating their skills.

Traditional fun fair rides for the children and lots of activities for them to get involved in.

A wonderful selection of classic cars, trucks and even miniature Lorry's.

The children could have their face painted and even make their own hobby horses.

Graham & Sue Harker demonstrated Rocking Horse Making & Wood Turning.

The marquee was overflowing with craft people demonstrating their traditional crafts.  We had spinning, weaving, wood turning, Yorkshire button making and all sorts of wonderful crafts that we hardly see anymore.  It really was a truly British day out.  If you want to see more pictures please see our facebook page.

'Bigger Bertie' will be unveiled at this years Fangfest 2012

'Bigger Bertie' will be unveiled at this years Fangfest 2012

Dawn from The Rocking Horse Shop Riding Bigger Bertie,
holding one of the Official Olympic Torches!
Go Yorkshire!

The worlds largest hand carved, working Rocking Horse will be on display for the first time at this years Fangfest Festival of Practical Arts on 1st & 2nd Sept.

The craftsmen at East Yorkshire firm The Rocking Horse Shop have been working hard to get the huge Rocking Horse finished for Fangfest on 1st & 2nd Sept. The horse was started last October when The Rocking Horse Shop was selected to inspire an international audience to ‘Have a Go’ at a new skill at WorldSkills, London 2011. They provided a ‘hands on’ opportunity for young people, at the world’s greatest skills competition, to try out a new skill, Rocking Horse Carving.

Tony Dew, Director and designer of the huge rocking horse said “I have been involved with rocking horses for over 35 years , but this, at 8.6 metres long by 4.65 metres high by 1.7 metres wide (28'3” long x 15' 3” high x 5'8” wide) is the biggest we’ve undertaken. It is considerably larger than life size and as far as we know is the largest hand carved, working rocking horse in the world. “

We are very excited to unveil Bigger Bertie at Fangfest for everyone to see. This is our 14th annual Fangfest and we started the event to promote British Craftsmanship and this year with the Olympics and our athletes pushing themselves to achieve so much, we thought it was a great opportunity for us to push our skills and make something extra special.” says Jane Cook, Managing Director .

Local business man Sean Smith from Detectamet Ltd, who bought an Olympic torch in a charity auction said “ This years Olympics has really shown what is good about Britain and when you see this fantastic Rocking Horse and the wonderful Rocking Horses The Rocking Horse Shop make you will see that Britain not only produces fantastic athletes we still have traditional craftsmen working hard to produce wonderful British products. “

The Rocking Horse Shop will have the Olympic Torch on display at Fangfest and visitors will be able to have their photo taken holding the torch.

The horse and rockers are constructed from laminated marine plywood with a varnished finish and the horse has been entirely hand carved and finished at The Rocking Horse Shop.

Many of the horse’s features have been ‘borrowed’ from Bertie, a real live horse who lives at The Rocking Horse Shop, and consequently it is affectionately referred to as ‘Bigger Bertie’.”

Tony worked out a great way to get him off the trailer and he was soon steady and down on the ground, Tony and Karl then put the scafolding up so that work could get started.

This morning Sam started to glue more pieces of Plywood on to Bertie so that he can start carving the body.

Bigger Bertie really is huge, he is 16ft tall and 24ft long and we hope to have him finished for this years Fangfest Festival of Practical Arts on the 1st & 2nd September.  Its a great day out for all the family, entry and parking are free so why not take a day out to come and see Bigger Bertie and enjoy all the activites of the day.   Also check out our Fangfest Facebook page to keep up to date with what is going on.

F H Ayres Rocking Horse Restoration at the Rocking Horse Shop

F H Ayres Rocking Horse ready for restoration.

F H Ayres Rocking Horse without a jaw, chin and only stumps for ears.
This F H Aryes Rocking Horse arrived with us 3 months ago, in a very sad state and it's owners wanted to see him put back to his original beauty.
Gerry stripped the horse down to the wood, Sam attached and hand carved a new jaw and chin and two new ears, added numerous coats of gesso and painted him.  Julie made and attached all the new tack including the lovely prommels which he would have originally had but had long been lost.  Gerry removed all the green paint of the stand and Sam stained and varnished it.
He is now complete and ready for delivery back to his owners ready for many more years of rocking.

Ian Darroch makes a Rocking Zebra

I first met Ian at the North of England Woodworking show in November and he said he wanted to make a Rocking Zebra.

Ian bought the plans and timber at the show and we delivered them the following week. Four months later we can see the final result.  A fantastic job, well done Ian.
