Mini Rocky Laminated Rocking Horse Carving Course With Peter Berry

Mini Rocky Laminated Rocking Horse

Carving Course

With Peter Berry

We have just had a great three day carving course with 7 students from all over the UK carving their beautiful mini rocky laminated rocking horses.

These courses are aimed at those wishing to make a laminated mini Rocking Horse. Peter Berry will show you how, using traditional hand tools and the latest electric carving tools which are ideal for this beautiful laminated horse.  Previous carving experience in not necessary and all skill levels are accommodated, and each student will be taught all the techniques to successfully carve the Mini Rocky. Sanding, varnishing, fitting stand or bow rocker & tacking up is not included in this course but can be easily finished at home.
We are delighted that Peter has agreed to run these courses at The Rocking Horse Shop.   Peter  is one of the country’s best known carvers, well known for his regular instructive articles in national magazines. Peter has a wide experience of all aspects of the craft at varied locations throughout the UK, Europe and North America. He has delivered city and guilds woodcarving courses at Leeds college of art and design, and less formal sessions at numerous shows and retailers.  A prolific carver best known for human and animal character studies, Peter brings a wealth of knowledge and an infectious enthusiasm to his teaching. He has inspired hundreds of people to experience the sheer enjoyment of woodcarving.
The course fee includes:-

  • Three days individual tuition with Peter Berry
  • Use of workshop equipment and all carving tools.
  • Lunch, usually cold meats and salads, as well as refreshments
  • Mini Rocky timber pack on bow rockers including the bows which you will assemble later. (You may carve the Mini Rocky on a safety stand for an additional £15.) Accessories and tack to finish the horse are also not included.

The Mini Rocky carving courses courses run 9:30am till 4pm on the first two days, 9:30am to 3pm on the final day (but we will start earlier and run later if need be!), with a maximum of 7 students on each course. These Mini Rocky courses take place in our workshop.
Accommodation is not included, but we can recommend several local B & Bs, pubs or hotels, and will send you a list on request.

Burnby Hall Gardens

Bigger Bertie with new owners Sean & Angela Smith

Bigger Bertie the world’s largest hand carved working rocking horse, arrived at his new home on a trailer after months of planning.
Local couple, Sean and Angela Smith of Seaton Ross purchased Bigger Bertie with the express wish that he would be used to benefit the local community  Angela said: "Our family has enjoyed visiting the gardens at Burnby Hall and our children just love rocking horses so we thought they would make a special combination for all to enjoy."
It had rained the night before, but concerns that the weather might put a dampener on the day were soon
dispelled as a beautiful sunny day dawned, sunlight reflecting off the lakes and highlighting the myriad of tulips on display around them. The day was perfect with many children taking part in the various activities including the popular hobby horse making.  The children could also make a carousel horse and go on a horse shoe trail.

A painting competition was held with children from all around the area painting pictures of Bigger Bertie, with our very own Tony and Shirley Dew taking on the role of judges and giving out the prizes.

Bigger Bertie has attracted widespread media attention at both national and international levels and he will now have a new home at the Gardens, giving their many thousands of annual visitors the opportunity to appreciate this fantastic rocking horse in beautiful surroundings.

Here are a selection of photos taken on the special day:-
